Tonight the first book club meeting was held in the Cross Cause shop. Sixteen people turned up for the meeting - fifteen ladies and one brave man! At least another 3 wish to join us but couldn't be there tonight. It was decided to call ourselves the Blackrock Book Club ( BBC) and to hold the meetings on the 3rd Thursday of each month.
We hope that the new Cross Cause Community Centre will be ready for us to use for the next meeting as it was a little squashed for us all in the shop!
The book selected to read for the next book club night is "Dancing Backwards" by Sally Vickers. |

St St ephen’s fund raiser a terrific success!
If you were passing through Blackrock on St Stephen’s Day you would have wondered had you been transported to another place when you spotted all the “French men” wandering around wearing their stripy sweaters and berets with strings of garlic hanging from their necks! To add to the atmosphere there was an “Eiffel tower” standing proudly on the beach. No, you were not in Paris, but Blackrock, host to the replay of the French v Ireland Football match! Kieran Philips, the unbelievably funny MC for the day, introduced the two 5-a-side teams as they emerged from their changing marquee on the beach. Interestingly the French team all sported giant sized hands which they liberally used during the match! The game ended in a draw and a penalty shoot out during which a Giant Hand (Conor Hughes) rushed onto the pitch, stole the ball and raced up the Eiffel tower, hotly pursued by the French team. When he reached the top he replaced the tricolour of France with the green, white and gold Irish Flag to cheers from the spectators!

Blackrock Tidy Towns have completed their work plan to prepare the village for this year's Tidy Towns competition. Over €30,000 in total has been spent in the last two months, made possible by grant aid from Louth Leader Partnership under the current Rural Development Programme, and with support funding from The Fairways Hotel.
The Sundial has been upgraded to celebrate its tenth anniversary, with new paving, state-of-the-art seating, and feature lighting. New seating has also been installed at both ends of the promenade, and information panels have been erected on the promenade wall highlighting the birds and other sea creatures that inhabit the seashore. The village entrance feature at Haggardstown Cross has had floodlighting installed, complementing the entrances at Greengates and The Loakers.
Flags, sponsored by Tiernan's Centra, have been erected all along the promenade and at the entrances to Blackrock, adding to the seaside character of the village, and for the tenth year Haggardstown Garden Centre have installed flowering tubs along the promenade wall as part of the "Blackrock in Bloom" initiative. They will also erect hanging baskets along Main Street by the middle of the month.
"We are delighted to see that a number of property owners, especially on Main Street, have painted their premises in preparation for the judging" said a Tidy Towns spokesperson. "It is important to remember that it is Blackrock that is judged in this competition, not just the work carried out by ourselves and the CE Scheme. Details of how individual property owners can contribute to the overall appearance of the village throughout the summer are available on the Tidy Towns pages of this website. Last year Blackrock was just one point short of a medal. This year, with the help of everyone in the village and the continued support of the County Council, we hope to get those extra few points which will earn the village its first medal" he said. |
