August Book Club

On August 19th, a wet and windy evening, twelve ladies and myself met up to discuss our latest book, Saturday by Ian McEwan. Geraldine O'Reilly who had chosen the novel, led the discussion by saying she had enjoyed the book thoroughly. It was agreed that McEwan had a lovely use of language but it was felt that sometimes he overwhelmed with the use of technical knowledge. Geraldine told us that McKewan had been influenced by James Joyce 's Ulysses in his idea of following the events occuring to Henry Perowne on one day, a Saturday, in February 2003. There were some parts of the story which were autobiographical - the very moving visit to his mother in a nursing home, for example.
A number of the group had enjoyed McEwan's style of writing so much that they were looking forward to reading more of his books.
Our next meeting will be on September 16th at 8pm. The book, chosen by Corry O'Dalaigh, is The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro - described as a "tragic, spiritual portrait of a perfect English butler and his reaction to his fading insular world in post-war England"

The Golden Dragon Karate Club are starting a class tailored towards anyone who would like to give it a go, but who have always felt that the kids come first when it comes to evening activities or after school clubs. Why not only ensure that your children are taking part in an activity that will enhance their self-esteem, co-ordination, general health and fitness, but why not give it a go yourself. Karate is for anyone from the age of about 4 to 104. It is amazing how it can transform your whole life. Why not come along this Tuesday, 7th September at 7pm - 8pm, and enrol yourself and your kids, or just turn up and watch or ask any questions you may have. We already have a number of parents who are members along with their kids, you don't need to be a fitness fanatic, just willing to give it a go. Any further information can be obtained from Sensei Tommy Marrett 086 647 8060.
