St. Fursey’s Graveyard is one of Blackrock’s most important historic landmarks, connecting today’s community with over 1,300 years of local heritage. Tradition holds that St. Fursey, patron saint of the Parish of Haggardstown and Blackrock, founded a monastery here around 650 A.D., around which an early settlement later developed.

Reflecting the goals of SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, the graveyard preserves a unique record of the area’s cultural, religious and social history. From the ruins of the medieval church and the historic grave markers dating back to 1729, to the stone walls and gates commissioned in 1880, the site tells the story of generations of local families. As a place of remembrance, heritage and identity, St. Fursey’s Graveyard helps ensure that Blackrock’s rich history remains protected and valued for future generations.
