Highlighting the importance of wetlands for biodiversity, carbon storage, and climate resilience.

Hamilton Marsh, one of Blackrock’s last remaining wetland habitats, is at the heart of a community-led effort to build resilience to climate change while protecting local biodiversity. Led by Blackrock Tidy Towns in partnership with local residents, schools, environmental organisations and Dundalk Institute of Technology, the project is restoring this valuable ecosystem through habitat enhancement, biodiversity monitoring and environmental education.

Reflecting the goals of SDG 13: Climate Action, Hamilton Marsh demonstrates how Nature-based Solutions can help communities adapt to a changing climate. Wetlands play a vital role in storing water, reducing flood risk, supporting wildlife and improving environmental resilience. Through restoration works, citizen science programmes, partnerships with the local schools and ongoing stewardship, the project is helping to create a healthier, more climate-resilient Blackrock while inspiring future generations to become active custodians of their natural environment.
