The New Line is one of Blackrock’s hidden treasures – a peaceful green corridor where nature and community meet. Once an important local route, it has evolved into a valuable haven for biodiversity, providing food and shelter for a wide variety of plants, pollinators and wildlife. Recent surveys by Blackrock Tidy Towns volunteers identified more than 30 plant species along the pathway, demonstrating the richness of this small but important habitat.
Reflecting the goals of SDG 15: Life on Land, the New Line clearly shows how even modest green spaces can make a significant contribution to biodiversity. Newly planted crab apple trees are providing an additional food source for pollinators, birds and other wildlife, while sensitive management is ensuring the area retains itsnatural character. Used daily by residents and schoolchildren, the New Line offers opportunities to connect with nature, from observing wildflowers to picking blackberries in autumn, fostering an appreciation of the natural world within the heart of the community.
