Blackrock Tidy Towns is one of the principal community groups in the village. Ottlogour objective is to make Blackrock a better place in which to live, and a more pleasent place to visit.

We have a core committee of 9 people which meets on the first Monday of every month in The Clermont, but we have a large group of Tidy Towns volunteers who help in litter control, maintenance of flower and shrub beds, and other community work around the village.

The Fane FAS Community Employment Scheme under supervisor Pat Rafferty is a mainstay of our activities in Blackrock.  Personnel from the scheme undertake daily litter patrols of all public roads, streets and beaches in the village, as well as keeping all our grassed and landscaped areas under control.  We also receive assistance from the Probationery Service with our beach cleaning activities.

SundialWe maintain close links with the various residents associations in Blackrock as well as with the businesses in the village.  We liaise closely with Louth County Council and the local councillors, and also with the Gardaí.

Major sponsorship has been provided by The Fairways Hotel towards the cost of implementing our three-year plan.  Our annual "Blackrock in Bloom" initiative, which sees the Main Street and promenade area ablaze with colour, is sponsored by Haggardstown Garden Centre.  Our summer flags project is sponsored by Tiernan's Centra.

Second Green Flag for St. Oliver Plunkett NS PDF Print E-mail

Saint Oliver Plunkett National School recently secured their second Green Flag.  We asked Mark Sands and Emmagreenschool1 McShane from the Green Schools Committee to let us know how the presentation ceremony in Croke Park went.  Here is their report.

On the 27th of May Mark and I, Emma, set off to Croke Park to receive our second Green Flag.  We met lots of other children from different schools.  We expected the journey to be long but it seemed short.  When we arrived, we were half an hour early. So we decided to look at the history of Croke Park.  After a while we were called to the conference room where we got our Green Flag.  Representatives from An Taisce spoke to us and told us they were very proud of their association with Green Schools.  We were very pleased to be a part of the 2000th Green Flag celebration.  We were then taken out of the conference room and into the stadium.  We were told to hold up these pieces ofgreenschool2 green card that from a distance spelt out 2000 for the 2000th Green Flag celebration.  After that we were called in for some lunch which was a spaghetti dish followed by apple tart which was nice.  We were given a bag which contained a recyclable pencil and bookmark.  Our next theme is water conservation.  Sadly Mark and I will have left the school by then but we hope to continue our work in secondary school.  By Mark Sands and Emma McShane (June 2010).

The new flag was raised at a ceremony in the school on the 18th of June 2010.

Tidy Towns Complete Work Plan PDF Print E-mail

Blackrock Tidy Towns have completed their work plan to prepare the village for this year's Tidy Towns competition.enhancement2010a  Over €30,000 in total has been spent in the last two months, made possible by grant aid from Louth Leader Partnership under the current Rural Development Programme, and with support funding from The Fairways Hotel.

The Sundial has been upgraded to celebrate its tenth anniversary, with new paving, state-of-the-art seating, and feature lighting.  New seating has also been installed at both ends of the promenade, and information panels have been erected on the promenade wall highlighting the birds and other sea creatures that inhabit the seashore.  The village entrance feature at Haggardstown Cross has had floodlighting installed, complementing the entrances at Greengates and The Loakers.

Flags, sponsored by Tiernan's Centra, have been erected all along the promenade and at the entrances to Blackrock, adding to the seaside character of the village, and for the tenth year Haggardstown Garden Centre have installed flowering tubs along the promenade wall as part of the "Blackrock in Bloom" initiative.  They will also erect hanging baskets along Main Street by the middle of the month.

enhancement2010b"We are delighted to see that a number of property owners, especially on Main Street, have painted their premises in preparation for the judging" said a Tidy Towns spokesperson. "It is important to remember that it is Blackrock that is judged in this competition, not just the work carried out by ourselves and the CE Scheme.  Details of how individual property owners can contribute to the overall appearance of the village throughout the summer are available on the Tidy Towns pages of this website.  Last year Blackrock was just one point short of a medal.  This year, with the help of everyone in the village and the continued support of the County Council, we hope to get those extra few points which will earn the village its first medal" he said.

Tidy Towns Judging 2010 PDF Print E-mail

blackrockJudging for the national Tidy Towns competition takes place during the months of June, July and August, and can begin anytime from the first of June onwards.  Last year Blackrock was awarded 284 points in the competition, just one point short of a medal.  This year the Tidy Towns ask everyone in the village to do all they can to get those extra few points to reach medal status.  The committee has identified a number of ways in which individuals, households and businesses can assist in achieving the highest possible marks for Blackrock this year:

  • Make sure your property, including boundary walls, is in a good state of repair and decoration.
  • Try to keep the footpath, gutter and roadway directly outside your own property tidy, weed-free and litter-free at all times.
  • Remove any weeds or grass growing at kerbs or at the bases of walls outside your property, or in the gutters or chimneys of buildings.
  • Make sure that the entrances to residential estates, and the common areas within estates, are well maintained and presented.
  • Erect hanging baskets and window boxes where appropriate.
  • Please carry a bag to clean up after your dog (dog fouling continues to be a problem in Blackrock).
  • If you are a smoker, please dispose of your cigarette end properly – don’t just drop it on the footpath or roadway.
  • If you come across litter while out walking, please pick it up and place it in the nearest bin. If everyone picked up even one item of litter each time they go for a walk it would help enormously.
  • If you see anybody dropping litter, point out to them that they are undermining the village’s chances of getting that elusive medal.
The Tidy Towns would like to thank everybody who is doing so much already to improve Blackrock, and asks for your continued and renewed efforts in this crucial year.  If you have any spare time and would like to help, contact any member of the committee.
